Was love invented by European poets in the Middle Ages. or is it part of human nature? Will winning the lottery really make you happy? Is it possible to build robots that have feelings? These are just some of the intriguing questions explored in this guide to the latest thinking about the emotions.

Drawing on a wide range of scientific research, from anthropology and psychology to neuroscience and artificial intelligence, Emotion The Science of Sentiment takes the listener on a fascinating journey into the human heart.

Emotion The Science of Sentiment A Very Short Introduction (Audible Audio Edition) Dylan Evans Donald Corren Audible Studios Books

Gives a very broad overview of the evolutionary and philosophical aspects of emotions. It gave me a deeper understanding why some people are so trapped by their emotions. Does a good job in differentiating thoughts from moods, feelings and primary/secondary emotions. References interesting research. It is not a new-age book about expressing feelings or being emotionally available. Maybe a bit outdated on the latest brain research.

Emotion The Science of Sentiment A Very Short Introduction (Audible Audio Edition) Dylan Evans Donald Corren Audible Studios Books Reviews

I agree pretty much with the previous reviewer. The book didn't measure up to what it was I expected but I don't regret reading it. It was enjoyable and insightful. If I had reviewed this book for the author before publication I would have recommended less use of fictional characters (from movies and literature) as a source of reference to emotional issues.
When I picked up this book I expected a snappy, general and interesting survey of the area of emotion that is customary of the books in this series. Instead, what emerged was the author trying to push his own view of the matter-- one inspired by evolutionary psychology. I learnt more about evolutionary psychology than emotion from my reading. Nonetheless, despite its shortcomings I do not regret buying this book as it does contain much that is interesting and the references that it provides are useful.

(I would have given this book 3.5 stars if I had the option)
I was going to give this book 3 stars for being somewhat interesting, but after just completing the last chapter, I am definitely dropping it a full star for wildly missing the mark of what this book should have been about, with its grandiose title of "EMOTION A Very Short Introduction".

Let's take it from the summary inside the front book flap, last sentence "Drawing on a wide range of scientific research, from anthropology and psychology to neuroscience and artificial intelligence [ TRUE! ], this Very Short Introduction takes the reader on a fascinating journey into the human heart [ FALSE! ]."

I can imagine 3 groups of people for whom this book, as written, would be useful 1.) Someone interested in the evolutionary biology of thinking organisms; 2.) Someone interested in potential new forms of artificial intelligence; and 3.) Someone with some sort of brain damage/disorder who seriously has no idea what an emotion is and has never felt one (as you can tell from this review so far, this reviewer does not fit into category #3!)

THIS BOOK DOES NOT COVER any type of emotion interaction, any type of flow such as "Emotion A often leads to Emotion B, followed by Emotion C, but could lead to D if this and such...". IT DOES NOT TOUCH anything like "Person with Emotion X interacting with person with Emotion Y may lead to result 7", etc. IT DOES NOT COVER anything remotely like "Some people, with Characteristic 1, react to Situation Alpha with Emotion S, while others, with Characteristic 2, react with Emotion T", etc.

EMOTIONAL INTERACTION IS HARDLY MENTIONED IN THIS BOOK AT ALL, let alone adequately covered.

THIS BOOK WILL BE VIRTUALLY USELESS TO PEOPLE INTERESTED IN Sales, Coworkers/Teammates, Friends, Family, Romance, Leaders, etc.

THE ONLY USE FOR SUCH PEOPLE I CAN IMAGINE FOR THIS BOOK IS TO USE IT AS A SMALL FAN TO HELP COOL THEM OFF.

It's not a bad book, it's written ok, it's somewhat interesting if you're into random basic pseudo Sci Fi type stuff, but it's severely badly labeled, titled, summarized, and vastly over-marketed. If you're looking to learn more about Human Interaction, "Emotional Intelligence", etc., this book ISN'T IT. Do let me know (via comment below) if you do find a good one!

Oh, and by the way, should the dear author of this book happen to read my review here… (Cheers, Chap! No hard feelings, I'm just being totally accurate here, as you will well recognize.) I disagree with your repeated assertion in this book that a non-emotional intelligent creature (like the example you use, Star Trek's Mr./First Officer/Captain Spock) could NOT have evolved my rebuttal is simply that computers play chess very well, and survive the dangers of the chessboard in a highly reasonable fashion, thus there's no reason to believe that similarly pure logic couldn't gather food, mate, survive the dangers of a jungle or battlefield, etc. Also, by the way, your irrelevant comment about communism somewhere around Chapter 2 Please realize that communism is slavery, communism is theft, whereby productive people are forced to work for the unproductive. I’m done with that argument, just realize that basic truth of HUMAN INTERACTION. GO LIBERTY! (For readers, communism is mentioned in maybe a couple paragraphs, that's about it, but it was irrelevant and annoying in this book.) Ok, WE ALL need a beer! Barmaid?

; )
Covers the topics that I was interested in reading about.
This books appears to be an original work by the author, although there may be
other similar titles.
This short book does exactly what it is intended to do. It provides an overview of the field, suggests avenues for further research and kindles the reader's interest and curiosity.
While especially the first few chapters are solid, the book slowly deteriorates into a weird transhumanist argument about robots evolving emotions. Yes, affective computing is important but why not emphasize animals as much?
